Professor Shafi Ahmed is a multi award winning surgeon, teacher, futurist, innovator and. entrepreneur. He is a 3x TEDx and an international keynote speaker and is faculty at Harvard Medical School, Bart’s Medical School, Imperial College London, Queen Mary University, Bradford University and Singularity University where he teaches on medicine, innovation and digital transformation.
His mission is to merge the world of medicine, global education, and virtual and augmented reality to democratize and scale surgical education to make it affordable and accessible to everyone using the power of connectivity to allow equitable surgical care.
He is a laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgeon at The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals where he held previous positions of clinical lead and cancer lead. He has been awarded the accolade of the worlds most watched surgeon as he has broadcast training operations using technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality and social media as well as on national TV for Channel 5 on Operation Live which was shortlisted for a BAFTA in 2019.
As a dedicated trainer, educator, and previous Associate Dean of Bart’s Medical School, he was awarded the Silver Scalpel award in 2015 as the best national trainer in surgery by the Association of Surgeons in Training. In 2018 he was awarded the Future NHS award for NHS70 by Members of Parliament. In 2017 he was the top British Asian star in Tech. He was also the British Bangladeshi of the Year 2017.
He is currently a member of the NHS Assembly advising on the long term plan. He is also an advisor to the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Health to help deliver innovation and digital Health and has been appointed as the Vodafone Connected Health Ambassador in 2020. He cofounded Medical Realties, a VR education company and is a non-executive director of Medic Bleep, a communications platform for healthcare professionals and Imera AI, a radiology artificial intelligence company.
